Lineage
Rooted in Osaka. Built in Singapore.
Soke Teruo Hayashi founded Hayashi-Ha Shitoryu-Kai in 1970. Shihan Michael Sim brought it to Singapore in 1999, and we keep close ties with the Honbu Dojo (headquarters dojo) in Osaka so what we teach stays true to the source.

Hayashi-Ha Shitoryu-Kai Singapore was established in 1999 by the late Shihan Michael Sim, who saw karate as personal development beyond sport. We train students aged 17 and above to sharpen skill, focus, confidence and character, and we keep strong ties with the Honbu Dojo in Osaka to preserve the techniques and principles of Soke Teruo Hayashi.
Our lineage
Soke Teruo Hayashi
Soke (founder of the style) Teruo Hayashi founded Hayashi-Ha Shitoryu-Kai in 1970. He brought together kata (forms) and fighting techniques from Shuri, Tomari, Ryuei-Ryu, Judo and Shitoryu, studied across Okinawa, mainland Japan and China. Dojos carrying his system now operate on several continents.
Our founder
Shihan Michael Sim
- Began training at 15 and earned his black belt within three years.
- Represented Singapore internationally in kata and kumite (sparring).
- Made room in the dojo for students facing financial hardship.
- Treated karate as a way of life, and founded the dojo in 1999 to pass it on.

Chief Instructor & Vice President
Lim Zhong Ming
4th Dan
Raising the standard at every level.
As Chief Instructor, Zhong Ming has raised the club’s technical standards, sharpening the technique of every karateka, from first-day beginners to black belts.
A kata specialist with deep roots in tradition, he heads the club’s kata coaching and turns classical forms into competition-ready performances, while helping steer the club as Vice President.

Ng Gim Kai

A former national athlete who represented Singapore at the SEA Games, Gim Kai sits on the committee of the Karate Union of Singapore (KUS). As President, he steers the club, and his influence reaches well beyond it into Singapore karate. On the mat, he builds the club’s kumite fighters, drawing on his own international competition experience. Off the mat, he is an entrepreneur running businesses across several countries.

Nicholas Tan

National champion turned program builder. As Program Director of Little Warriors, Nicholas blends karate with modern training methods to build resilience, focus and growth in young adults. As Secretary, he keeps the club organised and moving forward. Off the mat, he works at a major IT consulting firm, delivering large, complex systems that serve Singapore’s national interests.

Once led the SIT dojo as its sensei, coaching university karateka on the mat. Today, as Treasurer, he keeps the club’s finances and operations running smoothly behind the scenes, powering its continued growth so the focus stays on training.

Our students have won 300+ medals across kata and kumite over two decades. IVP is the Inter-Varsity & Polytechnic Games, the main competition between Singapore’s universities and polytechnics, where the institutional teams we train compete.

Every student starts at 9 Kyu on a white belt. Within each colour, the white tabs count down: three, two, one, then a plain belt before moving to the next colour.
